A knob handles that fine. But opening a drawer is a straight pull against friction and mass, and the heavier the drawer, the more of your hand you need on the hardware. A knob gives you two or three fingertips and a pinch. A pull gives you four fingers and a grip. On a drawer holding a stack of cast iron, that difference is the whole experience.

Which Drawers and Doors Actually Need a Pull?

Those openings either move mass or need two contact points, and a single knob cannot give a hand enough purchase to do it comfortably.
A loaded pot drawer is the strongest argument for pulls in a kitchen. Cookware and stacked dishware add up fast, and all of that mass has to break free from the slide before the drawer moves. With a knob, that force runs through a pinch grip at one point. With a pull, it spreads across a bar your whole hand wraps. The drawer isn’t easier to open in any measurable engineering sense, but it feels dramatically easier, and it stops being the drawer nobody wants to deal with.

One detail worth deciding early: measure hardware by its center-to-center screw spacing, not its overall length. Where Should Cabinet Hardware Be Placed?
Place hardware where the hand naturally arrives. On drawer fronts, center the pull horizontally and vertically on the flat rail. On base doors, hardware goes near the top of the stile on the opening side. On wall cabinet doors, it goes near the bottom of the same stile. The pattern puts every handle toward the middle of the room’s vertical reach.
That mirrored placement isn’t a style convention, it’s a reach convention. Base cabinets sit below the counter, so you approach from above and your hand meets the door near its top. Wall cabinets sit above it, so you approach from below. Follow the rule and every handle lands in a comfortable band. Break it, and someone is stooping for a base door handle at knee height.
How Does Grip Strength Change the Decision?
It changes it more than any style consideration. A knob requires a pinch and a wrist twist. A bar pull requires neither. If anyone in the household has arthritis, reduced grip, or simply a bad shoulder, pulls turn dozens of small daily frustrations into non-events, and the difference compounds because kitchen hardware gets used constantly.
The accessibility standards are blunt about this. The ADA Standards require that operable parts work without tight grasping or pinching, and they cap the force needed to operate them at five pounds. Those rules govern public buildings, not private homes, but they encode something universally true about hands: a design that only works for a strong, dry, dexterous grip works for fewer people than you think, including your future self.
